I know homeschool momas are always looking for systems that’s going to make homeschooling easy.

In this blog post, I wanted to share “5 Things I Implemented In My Homeschool That Didn’t Work”

1. Buying colorful book bins from the Dollar Tree.

First of all, let me tell you what I loved about these book bins.

They were very economical. I loved the colors and how each of my children had their own colors. It helped to eliminate, “this is mines syndrome” between my kids and It made my homeschool closet look very organized and exciting.

What I didn’t like about the book bins is that were very flimsy. But you get what you pay for right? I tried interlocking them but they would just come apart.

When my children would take out their books and put their books back in the bins, they would flip over because they were so flimsy, and my kids didn’t make the situation any better because they would just leave them right where they landed.

It was so frustrating for me to walk into my homeschool closet that I just organized, to find it looking like a tornado flew though it.

Don’t think I let them get away with leaving them on the floor for me to clean up. I made them clean up the mess.

Yes, I am also doing the challenge and I am currently is on day 8. Which is cleaning and decluttering the bathrooms.

I haven’t made it to the homeschool room yet, but I think I am going to switch my days and make the homeschool room day 8. I am so ready to donate those book bins and find a new system.

I think if I would have used a strong adhesive tape to stabilize the book bins, to the the bookshelves, it would’ve worked, but I didn’t want to risk pulling off the white paint that was used to paint the bookshelves.

2. My Children’s daily homeschool schedule to do list. I guess I was over zealous and excited about the curriculum I brought my kids this school year. Check out My Curriculum picks for the 2020-2021 school year.

I created a daily homeschool schedule to do list for each of my children. I had broken down the days and calculated if we did these many pages a day, we would get done with schooling around this time frame.

It was nothing fancy, I didn’t type it out, it was just for our own use. I included pictures of my 4th grader schedule up top because I wanted you to get a real visual of what I did. I laminated it.

Ok, kids have their own limits of what they can handle in a day. I loaded too much work on them for a day, and on top of that, they would lose their daily schedule to do list. I was very frustrated when a child would not have their to do list. It made me feel like I was off track with our goals.

This system did not work in our homeschool. I completely got rid of the schedule to do list and allowed my children to pick out 5 subjects they wanted to do for the day.

It had to included math, language arts, writing and the other 2 subjects would be whatever they picked. I made sure they incorporated science, spelling, history and reading throughout the week, but they only did 5 subjects a day.

It will explain to you more in depth on how I record keep for my homeschool. I was using a box that I found in my home because it was the only thing that fitted my hanging file folders.

My son loves to climb on everything and he used my file folder box as a step ladder and crushed part of my box. The box was longer and bigger than I wanted it to be but it worked for the hanging file folders.

A couple of times I found my file folders on the floor and scattered everywhere. I wonder who was the culprit? My son of course!

So I got rid of that crushed cardboard file folder system and brought a very strudy hard plastic file folder crate from Walmart.

4. My daughter going to a private Christian school. I worked so hard to get my 9th grader transcript and portfolio together. I visited the school we wanted her to attend and filled out the application. We talked with the principle and the teachers, and then Covid 19 hits.

The principle could not tell me anything because they was very unsure how their 2020-2021 school year would look like. It is a small Christian school that had a big 8th grade student class.

The 9th, 10th, 11th and 12th grade shared one big space because when you got in the upper grades the student ratio was small but the 8th graders had to be accommodated first, which kick my girl off the list.

It all work out for our good, because the first week back in the Christian school had to close because someone had covid 19. My granddaughter also attended that school. This is something we both wanted her to experience but it didn’t work out for us.

So I signed my daughter up for a homeschool Co-op where she would go to school 2 days out of the week from 8:30am-3:00pm. She was loving it better than going to a school and sitting in a classroom all day.

But then something happened with the Co-op administration and they had to end to Co-op right before the first semester ended. This Co-op didn’t work out either.

I told my daughter maybe it is God’s will that you homeschool this year. That is exactly what I did, I am back homeschooling my nineth grader. I must admit, I was kinda of happy. Maybe we would try again next year

5. All of the field trips I had planned for my children. I had a whole list of places I wanted to visit for the 2020-2021 school year. All of my plans got canceled because of Covid 19.

We couldn’t even go to the park to play or go to the library which are our two favorite places to go, and our homeschool playdates was almost none existence.

So we had to get creative, we went on virtual field trips instead. We traveled as a family in our car. We did sneak in a couple of playdates with very close friends and family, not many though.

We had bonfires, nature hunts, roasted hotdogs, marshmallows, and celebrated birthdays together all in our backyard.

We brought our kids a small swimming pool and they played in the water and had a water squirts fight. We had movie nights at home. Went to the movies maybe twice together at our local movie theater. Although we couldn’t play at the parks, we took walks in the parks. We built themes around National Awareness Day Calendar.

At the end of the day, we made lemonade out of lemons.
